Course description

Project Term A & B. Hike the Appalachian Trail. limit: 12 students. cost: $150 + equipment

Do you like the outdoors and enjoy walking? Are you in pretty good shape? Then this adventure might be for you! We will hike the famous Appalachian Trail through West Virginia and Maryland. Along the way we will walk through Harpers Ferry, a restored Civil War town and national park, cross the Potomic River on a railroad bridge, and pass Civil War battlefields, mountain ridges, and spectacular overlooks. After the hike we will spend a day in Washington D.C. visiting the White House and other sights. To prepare we will go hiking twice a month during the spring and do one overnight camp-out (required). You can earn some or all of the money for this trip through a citrus fund raiser in February so don’t let the cost stop you!

Training Hikes

March 14 1:00- 4:00PM 5 mile hike, day packs. Walk on bike path, visit snack shop. Kensington Metropark
March 21 1:00-4:00PM
5 mile hike, day packs		 Kensington Metropark
April 4 11:00am – 4:00pm 8 mile hike, 15 lb packs Pinckney Recreation Area.
April 18 11:00am – 4:00pm
8 mile hike, 20 lb packs. Early spring wildflowers!		 Brighton State Recreation Area.
May 2 11:00am – 4:00pm 10 mile hike, 25 lb packs. Leaves emerging! Waterloo-Pinckney Trail
May 16-17 11AM Saturday – 2PM Sunday Final shakedown. Overnight backpacking trip with full gear: 17 miles over two days along the Potowatomi Trail. Start and end at Silver Lake Parking lot, camp at Blind Lake. Pinckney Recreation Area.

Fifth training hike: May 2, 11am - 4pm, Waterloo-Pinckney Trail.

Meet at the intersection of Glenbrook and Patterson Lake Road about 3 miles southwest of Pinckney.

There is a small parking lot on the north side where the Potowatomi Trail crosses Patterson Lake Road. We will walk 10 miles along the Potowatomi and Waterloo-Pincknety Trails to Green Lake, a campground in the Waterloo Recreation Area on the west side of M-52 about 5 miles north of Chelsea, between Waterloo Road and North Territorial Road.
