Try to get your hiking shoes and socks before the second training hike so you can test them on several long walks. I recommend trail runners, which are low-cut running shoes with a little extra stiffness and protection for hiking. There are many makes and models available at outdoor stores like REI in Novi for about $100 a pair. A second choice for up to one week of hiking would be regular running shoes with good support. Do not use Keds or similar canvas sneakers. I subscribe to the breathable - quick drying school of thought, which means no Gortex and lightweight synthetic socks. When it rains your feet do get wet, but shoes and socks dry quickly and don't build up perspiration. Wool and cotton socks take a day or more to dry.
You don't want to get miles out on the Appalachian Trail and discover that your shoes don't fit, or you really aren't in shape for this, or that you actually don't like hiking! Therefore these hikes are required for all participants. This is also a chance for use to come together as a group and have some fun together.
If you absolutely cannot attend a particular date, we will need a note from your parent in advance that you are unable to attend, and another note later that you have done an equivalent training hike on your own.
